"The Awakening" by Kate Chopin published in 1900

  • The Hearth 16 Lonsdale Road London, England, NW6 6RD United Kingdom (map)

Tickets: Free for Hearth members, open to non-members

Is Edna a fearless feminist or a wicked wife and mother? Is she sad, mad or bad? She is a trophy wife in a bougeois society, searching for her identity and true meaning in her life. She is looking for personal fulfilment and does not hesitate the break the rigid rules of the patriarchy. Gradually she becomes in touch with her emotions and discovers her true sexuality. Her rebellion is both bold and profound. There is a shocking ending to her story, a final awakening.

The novel is full of contrasting characters and is written in a lyrical style with symbolic imagery, highlighting the sensuality of Edna's journey. I look forward to exploring this in your company

This discussion will center on The Awakening - attendees are encouraged to read the novel in advance to fully engage with the session.
